For now I want to talk about fertile signs. Your body is going to tell you when you are fertile, so for some women an OPK is just a confirmation of what they already know. It's said the egg can only live for 24 to 48 hours, however the woman's body is ready to accept sperm days before the egg is released because sperm can live for up to 7 days. So in hindsight, women actually have several days of fertility.
Your body will allow you to see and feel these fertile signs:
1. Cervical Mucous, during ovulation and even sometimes days before ovulation your body will begin to produce cervical mucous with an egg white or watery consistency. You can see and feel this sign. You will see the cervical mucous by stretching it between your fingers and you may even first discover it by wiping with toilet paper. It will feel very slippery and will literally look like eggwhites. See the pic below:
Sorry this pic is so blurry
This is an example of what EWCM looks like. You can either have more or less of it. This is a sign that ovulation is very near because this type of mucous allows for sperm to live longer, thrive and it helps the sperm travel into your uterus.
Note: If you are having some issues with not having enough EWCM there are ways to increase it but some just don't produce this mucous or not enough of it. This doesn't mean that you can't get pregnant because there are sperm friendly lubricants that you can use. A really popular one is Pre-Seed.
Another way to increase your EWCM is by balancing your hormones, relaxation, and orgasms. I will go over this in my How To Increase Your Fertility section of this blog. Note: Usually immediately after ovulation you will notice your EWCM dry up very quickly because as soon your egg is out, the hormone progesterone kicks in, causing the mucous to be drier.
2. High, soft, and open cervix, when you are about to ovulate your cervix will become very open, so open that you can fit the tip of your finger in the opening. This is a huge sign your body is gearing up to ovulate. Your cervix will also feel very soft and will move upward and appear to be shorter. For some women it will feel as if it's not there at all. Which is why this sign can be very difficult for some women. It's okay if you can't feel your cervix because there will be other signs you can go by. But if you are familiar with checking your cervix just make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before cervical checks.
I have a video on how to check the cervix I will attach below. I get mixed reviews on this video because the video is long and I really take my time with explaining it, so either you love the video or hate it.
Knowing your own anatomy and how your body works will help you understand how to check your cervix.
3. Increased libido: This is a good one, you will get horny ladies! Sex will definitely feel so much better during your fertile time as well. But you will want sex and your partner will begin to look and smell better to you. If you don't have a partner you will probably want to masturbate more. If you are not experiencing an increase in sex drive then you may want to check your sex hormones. I understand that some women are not that into sex, I get it but the same sex hormones that give you the ability to get pregnant are the same ones that make you want sex and they are the same ones that make your vagina very slippery and wet.
If you are not experiencing an increase in libido or having issues with this I will go over this in my How To Increase Your Fertility section of this blog.
4. Cramping, aches in ovaries and/or spotting: You can experience cramping before, during and after ovulation. This is a great sign that you are about to ovulate and/or that you have ovulated. Some women don't get ovulation pains until after their positive OPK. So this sign isn't always the best sign of impending ovulation because you don't know if you are experiencing ovulation pains at the exact moment that it's happening.
5 Bloating, headaches, and nausea: Some women experience these other symptoms largely due to the hormonal changes of ovulation. I personally have never had headaches or nausea but the bloating I definitely have had. In fact ,during ovulation my entire pelvis and uterus, from the inside of my vagina and upward feels very congested. This could be because of the increase in blood flow to that area, as well as the increased libido during ovulation.
